Thomas's Hospital in London. The program offered classes for both medical school physicians and teaching sisters. Soon the Nightingale nurses, as they came to be known, with their vast nursing expertise, were in great demand. In response to need, Nightingale sent school graduates to other hospitals all over the world, including British hospitals in India, to train other nurses. Through her volumes of written works, she helped to reform hospital care, workhouses, and the army medical department.

Some 200 years later and prior to the revolutionary work of Florence Nightingale, Theodore Fliedner, an Evangelical pastor, opened a small hospital with his wife in 1833. Located at Kaiserswerth on the Rhine, it was staffed by a group of carefully selected young women, also known as deaconesses. From this core group, the deaconesses branched out into hundreds of groups, performing their nursing duties with kindness and expertise. Florence Nightingale Among those exposed to the high quality of care given at the Kaiserswerth Hospital was a young Englishwoman of wealthy background and social standing, Florence Nightingale.

Later she helped to found the American Red Cross. Schools Although Florence Nightingale was consulted, few of the schools that were then founded followed her educational model after the Civil War. Other than a night supervisor, operating room supervisor, and nursing superintendent, all care was provided by students, who were a source of cheap labor. The period directly following the Civil War saw the establishment of the first schools to train nurses: the Bellevue School in New York, generally credited as being the first; the Boston Training School for Nurses (which later became the Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing); and the Connecticut Training School in New Haven.
