In the present instance, it is the moral law that is the correct authority, and conscience as the internal reserve, where the whole of the man is engaged (Lewis2001c: 65), urging him to obey that authority (Lewis 1995: 27). Setting institutional parameters necessitates the prohibition of some activities, such as maltreatment of human beings, as well the prescriptions of other activities, such as maintaining or enlarging the fitting range of liberty for an individual to develop and exercise native talents and diverse gifts.

L ew i s : A P h i lo s o ph y o f E d u c at i o n Lewis’s long-standing suspicion over the uniformity of thought embodied by collectives was well worked out by the time he wrote “Screwtape Proposes a Toast” (2001e), first published in 1962, a year before his death and added as an appendix to The Screwtape Letters. In it he gives a bruising account of the ideology of equality as tied up with democracy. Democracy, according to Lewis, at some stage inverts to mean collective order at the expense of individual identity and freedom.

Its performance is to be judged by the precision, scope, and conformity with experience of the predictions it yields. In short, positive economics is, or can be, an “objective” science, in precisely the same sense as any of the physical sciences. Of course, the fact that economics deals with the interrelations of human beings, and that the investigator is himself part of the subject matter being investigated in a more intimate sense than in the physical sciences, raises special difficulties in achieving objectivity at the same time that it provides the social scientist with a class of data not available to the physical scientist.
