Via the hypophysis or pituitary gland this part of the brain is closely connected with the endocrine glands and mediates emotional behavior. It plays an important role in the generation and the expression of pleasure and displeasure, which in turn influence motivation. Initiative and motivation are often disturbed when there is damage to the frontal lobes. In serious cases this leads to a total absence of spontaneous activity and to complete apathy.
