In the aftermath of the failed conspiracy, Macho, who knew exactly what was going on, had ample time to take himself out of circulation until things cooled down, while Enrique had a very close call and was saved only by the alertness of Adela and the rest of the family women who detected the police snooping around and were able, with the help of some of the men working for my father, to sneak him out through a back door into the adjacent warehouse and into a truck and out of the city. The third conspirator was not so lucky and was caught and badly beaten and had to wait in jail for several months until the regime fell, while Enrique spent those months hiding in a friend’s house in the countryside.

Bread, rice and salad enjoyed entrenched permanency at both lunch and dinner; neither meal would be presentable without these staples. Soup, light or heavy depending on the time of the year, would come first, and if the soup was light, the beans would come as a side dish to be eaten with the rice, but they would be part of the soup if this was heavy; and the rice was always judged by how separate the grains were, with any degree of pastiness making it unacceptable; and the main course would usually be chicken, or pork, or beef, or occasionally fish, which did not have many followers.

Politics and music, fighting and dancing, these were the two beats that formed the harmonic texture of the island, and it would have been impossible to understand the country without taking into account these two forces and their interconnected rhythm. It also would have been impossible to fully comprehend Cuba without coming to terms with how and why this small piece of land, with a modest population of six million and no significant accomplishment to its credit, could have engendered in its inhabitants the high opinion they had of themselves.
