The Newman Club (Catholic) was on the north side. West of Telegraph Avenue, on the corner of Dana Street, sat Stiles Hall, home of the YMCA. This was the student center for the political groups, a role it earned by making meeting space available for a small fee. The student groups which weren’t allowed to meet on campus met here. Because the buildings where the entry-level courses were taught were near Sather Gate and most dorms were south of campus, the intersection of Bancroft and Telegraph was the main entrance for hordes of new students.
