There were four of us, and we all went to college. It was just something that we had to do. My parents, even though they were told that I had challenges, they never really accepted that I could bring home Cs and Ds. They were never like that. They always looked for As and Bs. There was an instructor in college my junior year that just stood out to me. It was a human resource class, and I took it one semester and had to drop it because I wasn’t doing well in this class. So, I ended up dropping it.

I felt a responsibility to myself. I did not want to walk out of that class. I needed to put my mind in a frame where I could sit there with an ‘‘F’’ grade. I was totally devastated, totally. I needed to put myself in a frame where I could sit there because I wanted to run. I try harder than the average student because I don’t want anyone to have anything negative to say about my age playing a part in this. The most challenging part for me is my own insecurities; I find them a daily battle, but I am stubborn and do not accept ‘‘no’’ gracefully.

I was a straight A student then, and I think that accounts for me passing the GED test thirty-seven years later. We were in the lunchroom at work one day, and the supervisor asked me where I went to high school. I said that I didn’t go to high school, and she wondered how I had gotten into my job without a high school background. So I thought: I need a high school diploma quick. I called the adult school to see how I could get a GED, and they told me all I had to do was to bring in my birth certificate and take a test.
