Example text

We danced and enjoyed the festive food; and, of course, at the end we were all a bit tipsy. After a few days at sea in the Indian Ocean we arrived in Mombasa. It had been pleasantly cool on the open sea, but as soon the ship was in the harbour at the quay, the heat and humidity of Africa hit us. There was no wind and it became quite hot. We stayed in port the whole night unable to sleep because of the continuous noise of rattling winches loading and unloading. Local Europeans came on board and I was quick to note that many of them were as yellow as lemons.

The anchor rattled down—I had finally arrived. It had taken us twenty-one days from Genoa to Dar es Salaam. Soon a lot of rowboats swarmed around the ship. We disembarking passengers all had to go into the dining room for the passport formalities, where we were joined by a Goan port officer who had come aboard. Some Europeans from the town also came aboard. One of them approached me. “Are you Mr. ” he asked. ” Konrad was his name and he had come to collect me. I got my luggage, stepped into one of the small boats, and together we were rowed ashore to the Customs shed.

Then there was Padre Wenzislaus from the Catholic Mission, who arrived in his familiar black cassock. He had been in Bagamoyo for many years and told us how the English bombarded Bagamoyo and also how the big house at the beach that had been near the Customs shed went up in flames. The Catholic Mission operated a small cotton gin. One day, after lunch break, one man was missing. After searching in vain for the man, they concluded that he must have decided to go back to his village. Their cotton was exported to Marseilles.
